Pomegranate benefits and nutrition, the juicy super fruit for your rescue

Best super fruit award goes to Pomegranate for its jam-packed healthy nutrition composition and also for being juicy

Pomegranate or Anaar as it is called in Hindi is a nutritious juicy fruit one can have any time of the year. However, pomegranate is usually available in winters. Everyone has seen it and tasted it obviously. But, yeah it is hard to pronounce at first look. The fruit is a berry which contains from 200 to about 1200 seeds. These seeds are pure love and I mean it. Let’s jump into the benefits of Pomegranate because you guys are here only for that.

1. Pomegranate nutrition

Pomegranate has all the important nutrients one would desire for good mental and physical health. The seeds of pomegranate contain a good amount of fibre (about 4 grams per 100grams), plant protein, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B9 (Folate) and Potassium. Magnesium is another important mineral which is provided by the pomegranate.

Not to forget that seeds or arils are also loaded with sugar. This sugar is good only if you eat the seeds with its fibre part. Processing seeds into juice actually discard the fibre part. Hence, I don’t recommend drinking excessive pomegranate juice due to its high sugar content. Pomegranate calories are just 83 per 100 grams of fresh seeds.

2. A remedy for Diabetes

There is a traditional use of pomegranate as a remedy for diabetes. Yeah, I just said that it contains a lot of sugar but when you eat the seeds with the natural fibre, the other micronutrients might help in decreasing the insulin resistance. It is observed that raw seeds help fight low blood sugar level.

3. Enhances sports performance

Pomegranate contains great quantities of Vitamin C and K in addition to natural sugar. This helps in curing muscles soreness after vigorous sports activities. Not to forget the improved muscle strength recovery which is an added bonus. Presence of sugar also provides a boost in the energy levels before and after the workouts/sports.

4. Loaded with antioxidants for detoxification

Our body steadily toxifies itself due to increased concentrations of free radicals in the system. Pomegranate seeds are packed with polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants, these chemicals give them their distinct red colour. Pomegranate contains 200% more antioxidants than red wine or green tea. Therefore, it is wise to consume it more often and protect your cells from damage and reduce inflammation.

5. Prevents Prostate and Breast Cancer

Various studies show that consuming pomegranate may help in stopping the growth of prostate cancer cells. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a blood marker used to identify the level of prostate cancer in men. If this PSA marker is doubled in a short period, then the risk of death from prostate cancer is increased.

The study says that consuming 250 ml of fresh pomegranate juice in a day has increased the PSA doubling time period from 15 months to about 54 months. That’s about four times increase.

Initial tests on breast cancer cells by pomegranate extract has limited the reproduction of breast cancer cells. However, loud claims cannot be made at this time.

6. Anti-inflammatory properties

Nowadays, chronic inflammation is causing various health problems including countless serious diseases. Inflammations lead to obesity, cancer, heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. A potent antioxidant called punicalagin is responsible for pomegranates’ high anti-inflammatory properties.

Various studies have shown that inflammation of the digestive tract can be easily reduced along with breast cancer and colon cancer. Consuming pomegranate juice for 3 months has lead to a reduction of inflammation markers in blood by up to 32%. So, I have to say no more, eat your Anaar every day.

7. Helps in fighting joint pain and Arthritis

With age, comes the joint pain. Arthritis is growing among older people because these guys when young, neglected their health. Joint pain and symptoms of arthritis occur due to inflammations of joints. So, yeah you got it right, eat pomegranate and say bye-bye to the joint pains as well as osteoarthritis.

How? Lab studies have shown that extract from pomegranate seeds actively block the enzymes that are responsible for the joint damage.

8. A Healthier Heart

Here we are, heart diseases are the major cause of deaths in the world now. The red juice is said to reduce the bad LD cholesterol in the body. And once bad cholesterol reduces in the bloodstream, things become less complicated.

Research has shown the positive effects of pomegranate seed oil on heart health. Only about 800 mg of seed oil in a day has significantly reduced the triglycerides and increased the ratio of triglyceride-HDL in the people volunteered for the study.

9. Regulates Blood Pressure

It is recommended for the high blood pressure patients to include pomegranate into their daily diet. As the red seeds of the fruit help in reducing the systolic blood pressure. People with High blood pressure should avoid taking stress and food high in sodium too. You know, just an additional tip.

10. Stronger Brain

A new study says that eating pomegranate everyday helps in boosting memory and learning power of the brain. The anti-inflammatory properties of the fruit also kick back the advances of Alzheimer’s disease.

11. Treats Erectile Dysfunction

Good news, good news everyone. You know what, eating pomegranate can help increase in the blood flow in the erectile tissue. Now I don’t think you should avoid this super fruit. However, more research is required before any loud claims.

12. Increases sex drive and fertility

Hmm, this looks impressive. Isn’t it? Yeah, the antioxidants present in the pomegranate helps in reducing the oxidative stress. The oxidative stress, due to high free radicals in the body, weakens the sperms in men and reduces fertility in women.

So more pomegranate, less oxidative stress meaning win-win situation. It is also shown to boost the testosterone levels in both men and women which is the main hormone behind sex drive. Okay, your bedroom is that way. I’m out.

See, I’m not forcing anything on you, If you think you can’t elevate your health with these things, you can have your beer. This article for those you can’t get healthier by eating fast foods and alcohol.

So, these were the Pomegranate health benefits you can utilize for a healthier lifestyle. Always remember a healthy body and mind will aid you in becoming wealthier and wise. More fruits are on the way, till then take care and eat healthily.
